NICU Skills and a New Year

As a NICU parent, I have gained the skill of questioning with an open heart. There were many times that we were told something in the NICU, or by doctors after we were home, that just didn't sit right with me. So, I researched, asked more questions and added to the knowledge shared with me.

This might be seen as overanalyzing, but it's gotten Skye a lot farther than what any of the doctors ever imagined.

Right now my part of Mother Earth is just waking up. Spring is edging ever closer with temperatures above freezing and more of the ground being exposed from the layers of snow. Honestly, I feel like I too am just waking up from a long, intense sleep.

New Years was not celebratory for us this year, it felt heavy. I started wondering what this whole January 1st thing was all about because to me, it seemed like an odd time of year (in terms of Mother Nature's seasons) to celebrate newness.

So... I started asking questions. :)

A friend of mine told me that there was a connection she'd heard of, about changing the date of New Years celebrations, back hundreds of years ago, from around the Spring Equinox (near April 1st) to January 1st. So... of course I went online.

I found articles on history.com and on wikipedia. They both mention the 1500s in France and when the date for the 'new year' was changed, the people who were slow to adopt this January date from the end of March/beginning of April were called "fools." Hence, April Fool's Day.

At this point in your reading, you're probably asking yourself, "Leanne, why on earth are you telling me this??" ;)

Well, here's why my friend: I'm changing when I celebrate my New Year this year! These first three months of 2022 have been... interesting (and sad and full and and and...). There is a reason we in the Northern Hemisphere felt the newness at the end of March! Mother Earth was giving us the opportunity to come out from under our heavy clothes and shed some of the layers that we had endured. I feel this now more than ever.

Another interesting fact I found in my searchings, is that April Fool's Day is an official city holiday in Odesa, Ukraine.

If you're like me and need a shift right now, let's make this end of March-beginning of April a new beginning. For Ukraine, for you, for me and the whole planet.

It's amazing what our NICU (or other) gained skills can do for us as we move forward and walk in our strengths. Don't you agree?

Comment below or send me a message. I'd Love to know your thoughts.

For the health of our Earth and the people,
Love always,
